Welcome to the first edition of SLR’s new look Advisory Digest, now quarterly and with space to explore topical issues in more depth. Our goal remains to provide you with the best insights and advice on the fast-changing world of sustainable business, keeping our sharp focus on practical solutions that create commercial success.
With eyes these last few months firmly fixed on political developments in Washington and Brussels, many are asking – are we seeing a generational roll-back in what was the seemingly unstoppable rise of concern about sustainability?
Our writers tackle the challenge head on, starting with an in-depth look at the consequences of a second Trump term in the White House. We dive into the implications for corporate reporting and strategies more generally. Ever practical, we also look at ground-breaking developments in one sector (media) and get up-to-date on work being done with life cycle assessments and decarbonisation techniques.
Standing back and applying my accountant’s eagle eye for the bottom line, my own sense is that recent regulatory changes crystalise trends we’ve been seeing for several years. Governments remain acutely interested in the impact of business on society, if unpredictable in their interventions. While Europe and America are rolling back some aspects, others, notably China and in Asia Pacific more widely, are not. Investors still want to derisk portfolios and look for resilient earnings. In short, the business case for carefully planned action remains strong.
And if some of the rules are going, that offers more space to decide what really matters for business success. In uncertain times, a solid foundation of a clear mission and a good plan is essential to guide an unwavering course. Your customers, and above all your teams, expect no less. I for one welcome the opportunity for a reset.
