Keep London moving, invest for the future

Mike Tuffrey visiting the new Northern Line control centre in Highgate where an innovative 'green roof' is helping reduce environmental impacts.

Record numbers are crammed into the underground, trains and buses – a daily nightmare for millions who commute, while the mayor is pushing up fares.

We need Transport for London to speed up the work to get new capacity.

  • Fund extra investment through a London Bond, not just from City financiers but giving ordinary Londoners the chance to buy in and see real improvements, like the municipal bonds of old.
  • Run express bus routes at peak commuter times, to speed people to work, and more orbital routes round London to relieve pressure.
  • Switch the Tube electricity supply to clean green energy, using the Mayor’s purchasing power to create extra renewable generation.

Express, limited-stop commuter buses to town are a great idea. It would be a simple and inexpensive way to speed up commutes from parts of the city not served well by train or tube – like my area in Streatham. And it would mean morning buses for local short-hops would be less crowded by commuters who only want to get to the first train/tube station.
