Policing

Truly safer neighbourhoods

Mike at Tuffrey Sydenham Police Station in Lewisham which is affected by cuts in policing budgets.

The former mayor doubled Council Tax and spending on ward-based police was massively increased. Yet fear of crime remains high, and the lives of too many young Londoners are blighted. It’s time to make neighbourhood policing a reality and get value from the money invested.

  • Protect the staffing in the ward-level Safer Neighbourhood Teams (SNTs) while cutting the waste and profligacy at the centre
  • Each neighbourhood to have a proper plan for policing that really involves local people in decisions about deployment and opens up the police service
  • Insist councils’ youth services work alongside the police, with at least one dedicated youth worker in each SNT
